What to look for in a farmhouse
With a farmhouse it comes down to the shell: the timber frame, the roof structure, the thatch or tiles and the foundations. Ask when the thatch was last replaced, about fire safety and insurability of a thatched roof, and about asbestos in barns and corrugated sheeting. Check zoning (residential, agricultural or a rural dwelling), the scope for outbuildings and a second unit, and the condition of the private water supply, drainage and any oil tanks.
